Living in Todos Santos: Art, Nature and a Different Pace of Baja
There are places in Baja California Sur that you visit.
And then there are places that make you slow down.
Todos Santos is one of those places.
Every time I drive north from Los Cabos toward Todos Santos, I feel the transition.
The landscape changes.
The pace changes.
The Pacific becomes more present.
And somewhere along the way, the feeling of being in a major tourist destination starts to disappear.
That is what I find interesting about Todos Santos.
It is internationally known, but it doesn’t feel like it is trying too hard to be.
There are beautiful hotels, excellent restaurants, art galleries, boutique shops and some extraordinary homes.
But there are also palm trees, gardens, dirt roads, old buildings, farms and a connection to the land that goes back generations.
Living in Todos Santos is a different experience of Baja.
And that’s what I want to explore in this article.

Todos Santos Has Its Own Rhythm
One of the first things you notice about Todos Santos is that it doesn’t operate at the same rhythm as Cabo San Lucas.
There is less urgency.
You can spend the morning having coffee, walk through town, visit a gallery, have lunch and still feel like you haven’t really started the day.
That’s part of the appeal.
Todos Santos has become an international destination, but its identity isn’t built around large resorts or a high-energy nightlife scene.
It is much more about place.
The streets.
The architecture.
The gardens.
The art.
The food.
The ocean.
And the people who have chosen to build a life here.
A Pueblo Mágico With Deep Roots
Todos Santos officially became part of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos program in 2006.
But its story goes much further back.
The settlement developed around the mission of Santa Rosa de Todos Santos, established in 1733, and agriculture became an important part of the area’s history. The region’s water and fertile land supported sugarcane production and helped Todos Santos develop into an agricultural center.
That history is still visible.
You see it in the old buildings.
The palm groves.
The gardens.
The mission.
And the way the town sits between the mountains and the Pacific.
To me, that’s an important distinction.
Todos Santos wasn’t created as a resort destination.
The tourism came later.
The town already had a story.
Art Is Part of Everyday Life
One of the first things people notice about Todos Santos is the art.
Galleries are scattered throughout the historic center.
You’ll find contemporary work, Mexican art, sculpture, photography, ceramics and handcrafted pieces.
But what I like is that art doesn’t feel completely separated from everyday life.
You can walk from a gallery to a restaurant.
From a restaurant to a small shop.
From there to a plaza or a quiet street.
The official tourism information for Baja California Sur describes Todos Santos as a place with a strong artistic and cultural scene, and that is easy to understand once you spend time walking around town.
It has attracted artists, surfers, entrepreneurs and people looking for a different way of living.
That mix gives Todos Santos a personality of its own.
The Pacific Is Always Nearby
Living in Todos Santos also means living close to a very different ocean.
The Pacific isn’t the same as the Sea of Cortez.
It feels bigger.
Wilder.
More dramatic.
And in many areas, the beaches are better suited to experienced surfers and ocean activities than casual swimming because of the Pacific swell and conditions. Nearby beaches include Cerritos, San Pedrito and Punta Lobos.
That’s another reason I think Todos Santos attracts a particular kind of person.
Someone who appreciates the ocean but doesn’t necessarily need a resort beach outside their front door.
Someone who enjoys the feeling of being connected to nature.
Playa Cerritos and the Coastal Lifestyle
One of the places that comes to mind when talking about life around Todos Santos is Playa Cerritos.
The relationship between the town and the coast is interesting.
You can spend time in the historic center surrounded by art and architecture, and not long afterward be watching the Pacific from the beach.
That combination is difficult to replicate.
It’s one of the things that makes this part of Baja so appealing to people who want a lifestyle that combines:
town + nature + ocean + community.
Food Is Part of the Experience
Another reason I enjoy Todos Santos is the food.
There is something very Baja about the relationship between the kitchen and the land here.
Gardens, farms, local ingredients and the surrounding agricultural history all contribute to the character of the food scene.
Today you can find everything from casual Mexican food to sophisticated farm-to-table experiences.
And yet, even when the restaurant is very polished, there is often still a connection to the landscape around it.
That balance is one of the things I appreciate about Baja.
Luxury doesn’t always have to mean something enormous.
Sometimes it means fresh ingredients, a beautiful setting and enough time to enjoy dinner.
What Does Living in Todos Santos Actually Feel Like?
This is where I think the difference between visiting Todos Santos and living in Todos Santos becomes important.
A visitor may see the galleries.
The restaurants.
The beaches.
The boutique hotels.
The historic center.
But living somewhere means seeing the less glamorous parts too.
It means understanding the distances.
The roads.
The services.
The seasons.
The local community.
And the fact that this is not Cabo San Lucas.
There are fewer of the conveniences you find in a major resort destination.
For some people, that is exactly the attraction.
For others, it may require an adjustment.
That’s why I think the best way to evaluate Todos Santos isn’t simply to ask:
“Is it beautiful?”
Of course it is.
The better question is:
“Does this pace of life fit me?”
The Community Is Part of the Attraction
Todos Santos has become increasingly international while maintaining a strong local identity.
You encounter people who have lived in Baja for generations alongside newcomers from Mexico, the United States, Canada and other parts of the world.
The result is a community with a distinctly international character.
But it doesn’t feel like a typical expatriate resort.
The historic town remains at the center.
Local businesses remain important.
And the surrounding agricultural and coastal landscape continues to shape the identity of the area.
That’s part of what makes it interesting.
Todos Santos vs. Los Cabos
People sometimes ask me how Todos Santos compares with Los Cabos.
I don’t think they are really competing for the same experience.
Los Cabos offers a much broader range of international infrastructure.
You have major resorts, golf courses, marinas, restaurants, airports, private communities and a much larger real estate market.
Todos Santos is different.
It feels smaller.
More artistic.
More connected to nature.
And slower.
If Cabo San Lucas is about energy and the marina, and San José del Cabo is about history, culture and a more relaxed urban lifestyle, Todos Santos offers another variation:
creative Baja living surrounded by nature and the Pacific.
What I Like About Todos Santos
What I like most is that it still feels like a place where you can disappear for a while.
Not literally.
But mentally.
You can walk through town without feeling like you’re constantly being pulled toward the next attraction.
You can have a long lunch.
You can spend time in a gallery.
You can drive toward the coast.
You can watch the sunset.
And then do very little.
Sometimes that’s exactly what people are looking for.
Is Todos Santos a Good Place to Live?
That depends entirely on what you want from your life.
If you want nightlife, major shopping centers, a large marina and the convenience of a major tourist destination, Todos Santos may not be the natural fit.
But if you value:
- Art and culture
- Nature
- The Pacific Ocean
- A smaller community
- Restaurants and local food
- A slower pace
- Outdoor activities
- Privacy and space
then Todos Santos becomes very interesting.
The important thing is understanding the difference between wanting to visit Todos Santos and wanting to live there.
They are not necessarily the same decision.
What About Real Estate in Todos Santos?
This is where things become particularly interesting from my perspective as a real estate advisor.
Todos Santos has attracted people looking for second homes, vacation properties, land and a more lifestyle-oriented investment.
But I would never start the conversation with:
“What property do you want?”
I’d start somewhere else.
“What kind of life are you looking for?”
Because a home in Todos Santos is not simply about square footage or amenities.
The location you choose can change your entire experience.
Do you want to be close to the historic center?
Near the beach?
Closer to Cerritos?
More private?
More connected to the local community?
Those are very different lifestyles.
And that’s where understanding the area becomes important.
Living in Todos Santos Means Choosing a Different Pace
The more I explore Baja California Sur, the more I appreciate that there isn’t one definition of the Baja lifestyle.
San José del Cabo has its own personality.
Cabo San Lucas has another.
The East Cape is different again.
And Todos Santos brings something completely different to the conversation.
It’s artistic.
Natural.
Pacific.
International.
And still deeply connected to its history.
That’s what makes it special.
Why People Fall in Love With Todos Santos
I think it usually starts with the atmosphere.
Someone visits for a day.
They have lunch.
Walk through town.
Visit a gallery.
Drive to the beach.
Watch the sunset.
And something clicks.
Maybe they come back six months later.
Then they stay longer.
Eventually, they start asking a different question:
“What would it be like to actually live here?”
I’ve seen this pattern in different parts of Baja.
And Todos Santos has a particularly strong ability to create that reaction.
My Perspective on Living in Todos Santos
I don’t live in Todos Santos, so I wouldn’t pretend to write this article as if I do.
But I spend time throughout Baja California Sur, and Todos Santos is one of those places I believe you need to experience personally before deciding whether it fits you.
For me, that’s important.
Real estate isn’t only about finding a beautiful property.
It’s about finding the right relationship between property, location and lifestyle.
And Todos Santos is a perfect example.
You can love the town and still discover that another part of Baja fits your daily life better.
Or you can visit once and realize that you’ve found something you weren’t even looking for.
That’s the beauty of exploring Baja.
Todos Santos Is More Than a Day Trip
A lot of people first discover Todos Santos as a day trip from Los Cabos.
And that’s a great way to start.
But if you really want to understand the place, stay a little longer.
Wake up there.
Have breakfast.
Walk through town in the morning.
Spend time near the ocean.
Have dinner.
See what the town feels like after the day-trippers leave.
That’s when you begin to understand the difference between seeing Todos Santos and experiencing Todos Santos.
Final Thoughts
Living in Todos Santos isn’t for everyone.
And I think that’s part of its appeal.
It doesn’t try to be Cabo San Lucas.
It doesn’t try to be San José del Cabo.
It has its own identity.
A Pueblo Mágico surrounded by palms, mountains and the Pacific, with art galleries, restaurants, historic architecture and a community that has evolved while maintaining a connection to its roots.
For me, that’s what makes Todos Santos worth talking about.
Because Baja California Sur isn’t one destination.
It’s many different ways of living.
And sometimes, the best way to understand what you’re looking for is simply to slow down and explore.
