There is a moment that happens to many people when they first discover San José del Cabo.
They arrive expecting Los Cabos.
Maybe they’re expecting beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, golf courses and spectacular ocean views.
And all of that is here.
But then they walk into the historic center.
They see the old mission.
They walk through the plaza.
They discover a small gallery they didn’t know existed.
They sit down for dinner.
They hear live music coming from somewhere down the street.
And suddenly, Los Cabos feels different.
Slower. More personal. More authentic.
That’s San José del Cabo.
I’ve lived here long enough to understand that what makes this place special isn’t one particular beach, restaurant or community.
It’s the way everything comes together.
That feeling is one of the reasons living in San José del Cabo can be so different from simply visiting Los Cabos.
And that’s what I want to share with you.
San José del Cabo Has a Story
Before San José del Cabo became an international destination, it was a small Baja settlement shaped by the ocean, agriculture, fishing and its oasis environment.
The Mission of San José del Cabo was founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1730, and the historic center that grew around it remains the cultural heart of the town today. San José del Cabo eventually became the municipal seat of Los Cabos when the municipality was created in 1980.
That history matters.
Because unlike places that were created almost entirely around tourism, San José del Cabo still has a town underneath the destination.
You can feel it when you walk through the centro.
The architecture.
The narrow streets.
The old trees.
The mission.
The plaza.
The galleries.
The restaurants.
The people who have been here for generations.
And then, just a few minutes away, you can find some of the most sophisticated residential communities and resorts in Baja.
That contrast is one of the things I love most about living here.
The Magic of Downtown San José del Cabo
If someone asked me where they should go to understand the personality of San José del Cabo, I would probably send them downtown.
Not because it’s the biggest or most impressive part of Los Cabos.
Quite the opposite.
It’s because it’s human scale.
You can park the car.
Walk.
Stop for coffee.
Look into a gallery.
Sit in the plaza.
Have lunch.
Keep walking.
And discover something you weren’t looking for.
That’s an experience you don’t get in every luxury destination.
San José still feels like a place where people live rather than simply a place designed for people to vacation.
The official tourism organization describes the town through its cobblestone streets, galleries, historic architecture and central plaza—and I think that combination captures something important about its identity.
Thursday Nights Feel Different Here
One of my favorite examples of San José’s personality is the Art Walk.
During the season, Thursday evenings transform the historic Gallery District.
The streets around the galleries become a place to walk, talk, listen to music, look at art and have dinner.
The official tourism organization describes the Art Walk as taking place Thursdays from November through June, when the historic district becomes an open-air cultural experience.
But what I like about it isn’t simply the art.
It’s the people.
Locals.
Visitors.
Artists.
Families.
Expats.
Mexican residents.
People who have lived here for decades.
People who arrived recently.
Everyone seems to mix together.
For someone thinking about living in San José del Cabo, moments like this can reveal more than any property brochure ever could.
And that is something I think is easy to underestimate when you’re considering where you might eventually want to live.
Community matters.
The International Side of San José del Cabo
San José del Cabo has become increasingly international, and that is an important part of its modern identity.
People from Mexico, the United States, Canada and other parts of the world have discovered the area as a place to vacation, own a second home, relocate or eventually spend more of their time.
For many international residents, living in San José del Cabo offers an interesting balance: the familiarity of an international community while still feeling connected to Mexican culture and local life.
You can hear different languages, meet people from different backgrounds and find many of the services and conveniences international homeowners are accustomed to.
At the same time, San José del Cabo has not lost its Mexican character.
That combination is one of the things that makes the city particularly interesting.
Why Living in San José del Cabo Feels Different
Living in San José del Cabo is not simply about choosing a quieter place to live. It is about experiencing a different rhythm of Baja life.
San José del Cabo has a personality of its own. It feels more relaxed than Cabo San Lucas, but it is far from sleepy. You can spend the morning at the beach, have lunch at a local restaurant, walk through the historic center in the afternoon and finish the day watching the sunset along the coast.
What makes it especially interesting is the balance between old and new.
Historic streets exist alongside contemporary restaurants, art galleries and luxury residential communities. Mexican families, longtime residents, international homeowners and visitors all contribute to the character of the city.
For me, that balance is part of what makes San José del Cabo so appealing.
A Quieter Way to Experience Los Cabos
San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are close geographically, but they can feel like two very different places.
Cabo San Lucas is energetic, social and entertainment-oriented. It has the marina, nightlife, restaurants, activities and a constant flow of visitors.
San José del Cabo has a different rhythm.
It can be lively when you want it to be, but it is also easy to find quiet moments.
You can have a relaxed breakfast, spend time at the beach, walk downtown, enjoy a long lunch and still be home before the evening really begins.
That doesn’t mean San José del Cabo is better than Cabo San Lucas.
It simply means they offer different lifestyles.
And understanding that difference is one of the first things I recommend to anyone considering making Los Cabos part of their life.
That slower pace is one of the reasons people who initially came here for a vacation eventually start asking a different question:
“What would it be like to actually live here?”
Nature Is Part of the Town
Another reason living in San José del Cabo feels different is the relationship between the town and nature.
The desert, mountains, ocean and estuary all come together here.
The San José Estuary is an important natural area near the heart of town and provides habitat for a variety of bird species and wildlife. It is also part of a protected wetland system recognized internationally for its ecological importance.
You don’t have to drive hours away to experience nature.
It is part of the landscape around you.
For me, this is one of the great luxuries of Baja California Sur. Luxury is not always about having more.
Sometimes it is having space, light, fresh air and the ability to step outside and feel connected to the environment.
Then There Is the Food
San José del Cabo has also developed a food culture that is much more interesting than many people expect.
There are elegant restaurants.
Casual places.
Mexican cooking.
International cuisine.
Farm-to-table experiences.
Fresh seafood.
Coffee shops.
Local bakeries.
And a growing number of places where the experience is as important as the food.
That connection between Baja agriculture, local ingredients and contemporary cooking has become an important part of the region’s identity.
You can spend an afternoon discovering art and finish the evening around a table with friends.
For me, that’s a big part of the San José lifestyle.
Life here isn’t organized around attractions.
It’s organized around experiences.
San José del Cabo Is Changing
San José del Cabo is not standing still.
The population of the city has grown dramatically over the past few decades, and the wider Los Cabos region continues to attract visitors, residents and investment.
The international connectivity of the destination has also expanded significantly, making Los Cabos increasingly accessible from major cities in Mexico, the United States and Canada.
That growth brings opportunity, but it also creates challenges.
Infrastructure, transportation, water, housing and responsible development all become increasingly important as more people choose to live and invest in the region.
This is one reason I believe it is important to look beyond a property’s photos and price when evaluating real estate in San José del Cabo.
You are not simply buying a property.
You are choosing a location within a community that is evolving.
Puerto Los Cabos and the New San José
One of the clearest examples of how San José del Cabo has evolved is Puerto Los Cabos.
Located near the estuary and just beyond the historic center, Puerto Los Cabos combines a marina, residential neighborhoods, dining, outdoor spaces and access toward the East Cape.
It represents a very different side of San José del Cabo.
Instead of historic streets and traditional architecture, you find master-planned neighborhoods, waterfront living, marina activities and contemporary luxury.
And yet, the location is important.
You can enjoy the lifestyle of a private residential community while remaining close to downtown San José del Cabo.
For buyers, this creates another interesting choice: do you want to be in the middle of the historic town, close to the beach, near the marina or inside a private golf community?
There is no single answer.
That is part of what makes San José del Cabo so interesting.
What Living in San José del Cabo Can Look Like
One of the things I find most interesting about living in San José del Cabo is that there isn’t one single version of the lifestyle.
For one person, it may mean walking downtown, visiting galleries and having dinner with friends.
For another, it may mean playing golf in the morning and spending the afternoon by the pool.
Someone else may prefer a home near the beach, while another person may want a private community with security, amenities and panoramic views.
Some people come for a second home.
Others eventually decide they want to spend most of the year here.
And some discover San José del Cabo because they are looking for a different pace of life altogether.
The important thing is understanding which version of San José del Cabo fits you.
Why People Start Thinking About Owning Here
Something interesting often happens when people spend enough time in San José del Cabo.

But I would never tell someone that simply buying property in San José del Cabo guarantees a particular return.

For someone thinking about living in San José del Cabo while also considering real estate as an investment, that combination can be particularly attractive.
The key is not simply finding a beautiful property.
It is finding the right property in the right location for your goals.
What I Would Tell Someone Considering San José del Cabo
If you are seriously considering living in San José del Cabo, my advice is simple:
Spend time here before making a decision.
Don’t only stay at a resort.
Drive around.
Walk through the historic center.
Have coffee downtown.
Visit the galleries.
Spend time at the beach.
Explore Puerto Los Cabos.
Drive through different residential communities.
Come during the week, not only on a perfect vacation weekend.
And most importantly, imagine an ordinary Tuesday here.
Where would you wake up?
Where would you exercise?
Where would you have lunch?
Where would your friends visit?
What would your weekends look like?
Those questions can tell you much more about whether a place is right for you than a list of amenities ever will.
Why I Chose San José del Cabo
I moved to San José del Cabo in 2022.

What I appreciate most is the balance.
There is luxury without everything having to feel extravagant.
There is an international community without losing the Mexican identity of the place.

Living in San José del Cabo has given me a perspective that is difficult to get from simply visiting Los Cabos.
