Living in Los Cabos: What It’s Really Like to Call Baja Home

There is a big difference between visiting Los Cabos and actually living in Los Cabos.

When you come here on vacation, you experience the beaches, the restaurants, the resorts, the golf courses, the sunsets and the beautiful weather. Everything feels easy, relaxed and temporary.

But once you live here, you begin to notice something different.

You discover the neighborhoods. You find your favorite coffee shop. You learn which streets feel completely different on a Tuesday morning than they do on a Saturday night. You start recognizing people. You develop routines. You discover restaurants you would never have found on a resort property. And eventually, Baja stops feeling like a destination and starts feeling like home.

I moved to Los Cabos in 2022, and one of the things I appreciate most about living in Los Cabos is that, despite being an internationally recognized destination, it still has places where life feels genuinely local.

For me, that feeling is especially strong in San José del Cabo.

What Is It Really Like Living in Los Cabos?

The first thing I would tell anyone considering moving here is that Los Cabos isn’t one single lifestyle.

That may sound obvious, but it is one of the most important things to understand.

San José del Cabo feels different from Cabo San Lucas. The Tourist Corridor feels different from either city. Communities on the East Cape offer another experience altogether.

You can live surrounded by luxury, golf and resort amenities, or you can live closer to a traditional Mexican town atmosphere. You can spend your mornings walking along the beach or your evenings exploring restaurants and galleries downtown.

And that variety is one of the things that makes life here so interesting.

For me, the appeal isn’t simply that there is an ocean nearby.

It is the combination of Baja’s landscape, the climate, the lifestyle and the feeling of having more space to breathe.

Why I Personally Love Living in San José del Cabo

I live in San José del Cabo, and if there is one part of town that I never get tired of, it is the historic downtown.

There is something about walking through the streets around Plaza Mijares that reminds you that San José del Cabo existed long before the luxury resorts and residential communities that have made Los Cabos famous around the world.

You see local businesses, restaurants, galleries and people going about their daily lives.

And then there is the Art Walk.

On an evening when the galleries are open and the streets have that particular energy, San José feels completely different from the resort experience many visitors associate with Los Cabos.

You can have dinner, walk through the historic center, stop for a drink and spend an evening simply enjoying the atmosphere.

That is one of the things I personally value about living here.

You don’t have to be on vacation to enjoy Los Cabos.

The things that make the destination special can become part of your normal life.

San José del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas?

This is one of the first questions people often ask when they start considering life in Los Cabos.

And my answer is usually:

It depends on the life you want to live.

San José del Cabo

San José tends to have a more relaxed pace.

There is the historic downtown, Plaza Mijares, the Art District, restaurants, galleries and a stronger connection to the traditional character of the area.

For someone who wants a quieter lifestyle while still having excellent restaurants, beaches, golf and modern amenities nearby, San José can be a very natural fit.

Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas has a different energy.

The marina is at the heart of the city, and there is a much more active atmosphere around restaurants, nightlife, entertainment and tourism.

It can be a great fit for someone who enjoys being close to that energy and wants more activity immediately around them.

Neither is necessarily better.

They simply offer different versions of the Los Cabos lifestyle.

And that is something I always encourage people to experience for themselves before deciding where they want to live.

Living in Los Cabos Is About More Than Living Near the Beach

One of the biggest mistakes someone can make when considering a move here is choosing a property before understanding the lifestyle they actually want.

The ocean view is beautiful.

The pool is beautiful.

The architecture may be beautiful.

But what happens when you close the front door?

Where do you go for dinner?

Where do you exercise?

How far do you want to drive?

Do you want to walk into town?

Do you want golf outside your door?

Do you want a private community with extensive amenities?

Or would you rather have a neighborhood where you can walk to local restaurants and experience more of the everyday character of Baja?

These questions can be more important than the property itself.

Because living in Los Cabos isn’t just about where your home is located. It’s about how that location allows you to live.

The Los Cabos Lifestyle

There is a rhythm to life here that is difficult to explain until you experience it.

Mornings can start with a workout, a walk, coffee or time outdoors.

You can spend part of the day working and still have time in the afternoon to go to the beach, play golf or simply enjoy the weather.

And then there are the evenings.

One of my favorite things about Los Cabos is how easy it can be to transition from an ordinary workday into something that feels completely different.

You might finish work, head into San José, have dinner downtown and walk around Plaza Mijares.

Or you might drive toward the coast and watch the sunset.

Or you might simply stay home, play guitar and enjoy an evening with family.

That last part is important.

The luxury of living here isn’t necessarily having something spectacular happen every day.

Sometimes it is having the freedom to enjoy an ordinary day in a beautiful place.

You Start Discovering a Different Side of Baja

Another thing I have learned from living here is that Los Cabos can become a starting point for discovering much more of Baja California Sur.

Once you live here, places like Todos Santos, Pescadero, Cerritos, La Paz and the East Cape become part of the conversation.

You begin exploring beyond the places most visitors know.

You find your own favorite places to eat.

You discover beaches that aren’t part of your original itinerary.

You take a weekend drive simply because you can.

That is one of the pleasures of living in Baja.

There is always another road to explore.

What I Personally Appreciate Most About Living Here

After spending years in hospitality and real estate and then making Los Cabos my home, I have come to appreciate something that is difficult to put into a property description.

Space.

Not necessarily physical space.

Mental space.

There is something about the Baja environment that encourages a different pace.

You can still have a demanding career. You can still have meetings, deadlines and responsibilities. Los Cabos isn’t some place where real life disappears.

But outside of work, there is a feeling that you can step away from the noise.

Go outside.

Drive to the coast.

Have dinner with your family.

Walk through downtown.

Watch the sunset.

Play golf.

Explore.

Or simply do nothing.

That balance is a big part of what makes living in Los Cabos attractive to me.

Is Los Cabos a Good Place to Live Full-Time?

For the right person, absolutely.

But I don’t think it is useful to pretend that living here is perfect.

Los Cabos is geographically isolated compared with many major cities. Certain areas can experience traffic, particularly during busy periods. Costs can vary significantly depending on your lifestyle and where you choose to live.

And adapting to life in Mexico requires some flexibility.

You also have to understand that Los Cabos is a destination with a very international population. Depending on where you live, your experience can range from deeply local to highly resort-oriented.

That is why I think the question isn’t simply:

“Is Los Cabos a good place to live?”

A better question is:

“Is the Los Cabos lifestyle right for me?”

That is a much more useful question.

Where Do People Live in Los Cabos?

There isn’t one answer.

Some people are drawn to the energy of Cabo San Lucas.

Others prefer the character and slower pace of San José del Cabo.

Some want to be closer to the coast and golf communities along the Tourist Corridor.

Others are looking for something farther away from the traditional resort areas, such as the East Cape.

And then there are private communities designed around very specific lifestyles — golf, beachfront living, family amenities, privacy or resort services.

This is why I believe that choosing where to live should come before choosing what property to buy.

Once you understand the lifestyle, the property search becomes much clearer.

What I Would Tell Someone Thinking About Moving to Los Cabos

If you are seriously considering moving here, my advice would be simple:

Don’t make your decision based only on what you see during a vacation.

Come back.

Stay for a little longer.

Explore different areas.

Spend time downtown.

Visit neighborhoods outside the resort environment.

Drive around.

Have dinner in different parts of town.

Experience a normal weekday.

Ask yourself where you could see yourself having an ordinary Tuesday — not just your perfect Saturday.

Because that is what you’re ultimately choosing.

You’re not just choosing a house.

You’re choosing a lifestyle.

Living in Los Cabos: My Perspective After Making Baja Home

I came to Los Cabos because of my career in real estate, but over time it became much more than a place where I work.

It became home.

And that has changed the way I look at real estate here.

When someone asks me about a property, I don’t only think about the square footage, the view or the price.

I think about what it would actually feel like to live there.

Is the location right for the person?

Does the community fit the way they want to spend their time?

Will they enjoy being there when they aren’t on vacation?

Is this a place where they can imagine building a life?

Those are very different questions from simply asking which property is the most impressive.

Final Thoughts

Living in Los Cabos is different from vacationing in Los Cabos.

And for me, that difference is exactly what makes it special.

The beaches and sunsets are incredible, of course. But what I appreciate most after living here is the opportunity to build a normal life around them.

A morning workout.

A day of work.

Dinner downtown.

A walk around Plaza Mijares.

An evening with family.

A weekend exploring another part of Baja.

Those simple moments are what turn a beautiful destination into home.

I don’t just sell Los Cabos.

I live here.
