Is Los Cabos Safe? A Local Perspective from Someone Who Lives Here
By Vic Bigurra, Certified Real Estate Advisor
If you’re thinking about visiting, retiring, or buying property in Los Cabos, you’ve probably asked yourself one important question:
Is Los Cabos safe?
It’s a fair question.
Every time there’s a news story about Mexico, many people naturally wonder if it reflects daily life here.
As someone who lives in Los Cabos and works with buyers from the United States, Canada, and Mexico every day, I’d like to share my perspective—not as someone trying to sell you a property, but as someone who calls this place home.
The Short Answer
Overall, Los Cabos is widely regarded as one of Mexico’s most popular destinations for international visitors, retirees, and second-home owners, with many gated communities offering high levels of residential security.
Like any popular destination—whether it’s Miami, Los Angeles, Vancouver, or Barcelona—there are isolated incidents that make headlines. Those events deserve attention, but they don’t necessarily represent everyday life for the vast majority of residents and visitors.
Most people living in Los Cabos spend their days enjoying the beaches, restaurants, golf courses, outdoor activities, and the relaxed lifestyle that attracts people from all over the world.
Why Headlines Don’t Always Tell the Whole Story
It’s understandable that news reports can be concerning.
The reality is that news tends to focus on exceptional events because those are what make headlines.
What you rarely see reported is the daily routine experienced by thousands of families, retirees, business owners, and visitors who enjoy Los Cabos without incident.
That doesn’t mean problems don’t exist.
It means it’s important to separate isolated events from everyday reality.
Living Here Is Different Than Reading About It
I’ve lived in Los Cabos since 2022.
During that time, I’ve had the opportunity to explore many different communities, work with clients from around the world, and experience life here beyond the tourist areas.
One thing I often tell buyers is this:
Your experience depends greatly on where you live, how you live, and the decisions you make—just like anywhere else in the world.
Different neighborhoods offer different lifestyles, and choosing the right community is just as important as choosing the right home.
Safe Communities Popular with International Buyers
Many international buyers choose communities known for their security, amenities, and well-managed environments.
Some examples include:
- Palmilla
- Puerto Los Cabos
- Querencia
- Cabo del Sol
- Pedregal
- Diamante
- El Encanto de La Laguna
- Club Campestre
- Cabo Bello
Many of these communities feature:
- 24-hour gated security
- Controlled access
- Private roads
- Professional property management
- Established homeowner associations
These features provide additional peace of mind for both full-time residents and second-home owners.
Common Sense Still Matters
No place in the world is completely free from crime.
Whether you’re in New York, Toronto, London, or Los Cabos, it’s always wise to use common sense.
Simple habits such as protecting your belongings, staying aware of your surroundings, and choosing reputable transportation contribute to a positive experience anywhere you travel.
Why So Many People Continue Choosing Los Cabos
Despite occasional headlines, Los Cabos continues attracting:
- Retirees
- Remote workers
- Families
- Investors
- Luxury home buyers
- Vacation homeowners
People aren’t choosing Los Cabos simply because of the weather.
They choose it because of the lifestyle.
World-class golf.
Beautiful beaches.
Excellent restaurants.
International schools.
Modern healthcare.
Outdoor living nearly year-round.
A welcoming international community.
