Golf in Los Cabos: Where Luxury, Lifestyle and Real Estate Meet
There is something about golf in Los Cabos that is difficult to explain if you have never been here.
And I should probably start with a confession:
I’m not a golfer.
I don’t spend my weekends on the course, I don’t know how to read a green, and you probably won’t find me discussing my handicap over dinner.
But after living and working in Los Cabos, I’ve learned something important about golf here.
It is about much more than golf.
In Los Cabos, golf has become part of a much larger lifestyle—one that combines the ocean, the desert, privacy, architecture, fine dining, wellness, resorts, private clubs and some of the most distinctive residential communities in Baja California Sur.
And from my perspective as a real estate advisor, that makes golf particularly interesting.
Because when you look at some of the communities that surround these courses, you begin to understand that the golf course isn’t always the destination.
Sometimes, it’s part of the reason people choose the destination in the first place.
Golf in Los Cabos Is About the Setting
One of the things that makes golf in Los Cabos different is the landscape.
Imagine standing on a fairway with desert mountains behind you, cardón cactus around you and the Sea of Cortez or Pacific Ocean stretching toward the horizon.
That is the backdrop here.
Los Cabos currently has 18 golf courses open for play, with courses designed by names including Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and others. The region’s combination of mountains, desert and ocean has become one of the defining characteristics of its golf experience.
And honestly, even for someone like me who doesn’t play, that is pretty impressive.
I’ve driven past these communities, walked through them, visited properties and seen how the golf courses become part of the architecture of the entire neighborhood.
The fairways aren’t simply somewhere behind the houses.
They become part of the view.
Part of the feeling.
Part of the lifestyle.
The Golf Communities That Define Los Cabos
There are many golf courses in the region, but some communities stand out because golf is deeply connected to the way people live there.
Palmilla
Palmilla is one of the names that immediately comes to mind when talking about golf in Los Cabos.
Palmilla Golf Club opened in the early 1990s and was the first Jack Nicklaus Signature design in Latin America. Today, the club has 27 holes across three nines, moving through the mountains and down toward the Sea of Cortez.
But Palmilla is not simply about golf.
It is about the combination of golf, beach, architecture, privacy and proximity to San José del Cabo.
That combination is precisely what has made Palmilla one of the most recognizable luxury communities in Los Cabos.
And you don’t have to be a golfer to appreciate it.
Querencia
Querencia is another example of how golf and residential life can become inseparable.
Located in the hills above the Sea of Cortez, Querencia is a private golf community centered around a Tom Fazio-designed course.
I have personally spent time exploring Querencia, and what stayed with me wasn’t simply the golf course.
It was the sense of community.
The clubhouse.
The views.
The way the homes interact with the landscape.
The feeling that this is a place designed around a particular way of living.
And that’s something I notice often in Los Cabos.
The most interesting communities aren’t selling a house. They’re creating an environment around the house.
Cabo del Sol
Cabo del Sol is particularly interesting right now because it represents another chapter in the evolution of golf in Los Cabos.
The community has two golf experiences: the private Cove Club Golf Course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design, and the Cabo del Sol Course, originally designed by Tom Weiskopf.
But Cabo del Sol has become much more than golf.
There is a growing combination of residences, hospitality, dining, beach access and wellness.
The community describes its lifestyle as a combination of golf, beach, ocean views and residential living.
And that’s exactly why I think Cabo del Sol deserves attention.
Golf is part of the story—but it isn’t the entire story.
Chileno Bay
Chileno Bay brings another variation to the equation.
The Tom Fazio-designed course sits above the Sea of Cortez and is integrated with a private club and resort community. Guests of the Chileno Bay Resort & Residences can access the otherwise-private golf experience.
Here again, golf is combined with something else that defines Los Cabos:
the beach.
And that combination is powerful.
Golf in the morning.
The ocean in the afternoon.
Dinner with friends in the evening.
That is a very different concept from simply playing 18 holes.
Quivira
Then there is the Pacific side.
Quivira is one of the most dramatic examples of golf in Los Cabos, with a Jack Nicklaus Signature course integrated into the Pacific landscape. The course moves through dunes, desert terrain and elevated coastal areas with dramatic ocean views.
The setting is completely different from the Sea of Cortez side.
And that’s something I think people sometimes miss when they first start looking at Los Cabos real estate.
There isn’t one Los Cabos.
There are different environments, different communities and completely different ways of experiencing Baja.
Golf is one of the ways you can discover those differences.
You Don’t Have to Be a Golfer to Love a Golf Community
This is probably the part I find most interesting.
You don’t necessarily have to play golf to appreciate living next to one.
Why?
Because the golf course often creates something that goes beyond the game.
Open space.
Landscaping.
Views.
Privacy.
Walking paths.
Clubhouses.
Restaurants.
Social spaces.
And, in many cases, a very specific sense of community.
When I’m showing properties, I don’t assume that every buyer interested in a golf community is a golfer.
Some people simply like the environment.
Others want the privacy.
Some want the views.
Some like the architecture.
And some simply like the idea of having access to a private club where friends and family can spend time together.
Golf can be the centerpiece without being the reason you personally play.
What Golf Has to Do With Luxury Real Estate in Los Cabos
This is where the subject becomes particularly interesting to me professionally.
Some of the most recognizable luxury residential communities in Los Cabos have golf as part of their identity.
But I don’t think the golf course itself is necessarily what makes these communities valuable.
It is the ecosystem around it.
A well-designed golf community can bring together:
- Privacy
- Security and controlled access
- Ocean or mountain views
- Club amenities
- Restaurants
- Wellness
- Beach access
- Social activities
- Resort services
- Outdoor recreation
- A strong sense of community
And when all of those elements come together, the property becomes part of something much bigger.
You’re not simply buying a house overlooking a golf course.
You’re buying into a particular way of experiencing Los Cabos.
That distinction matters.
The Golf Lifestyle in Los Cabos
I’ve always believed that one of the biggest attractions of Los Cabos is the ability to create your own rhythm.
Maybe your ideal day starts with coffee overlooking the ocean.
Maybe you play golf.
Maybe you don’t.
Maybe you spend the afternoon at the beach.
Maybe you have lunch with friends.
Maybe you go into San José del Cabo for dinner.
Or perhaps you never leave your community.
That’s the beauty of it.
Luxury in Los Cabos doesn’t always mean something flashy.
Sometimes luxury is simply having options.
Golf can be one of those options.
The People Behind the Golf
Another reason golf has become so important here is the caliber of the designers who have shaped the region.
Los Cabos has courses associated with some of the biggest names in golf, including Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods.
Palmilla, for example, was Nicklaus’s first Signature design in Latin America.
Cabo del Sol’s Cove Club is another Jack Nicklaus Signature design, while its other course was originally designed by Tom Weiskopf.
Chileno Bay was designed by Tom Fazio.
And Quivira and Diamante added another layer to the destination’s golf reputation, with designs associated with Nicklaus and Woods respectively.
You start to understand why golf has become such an important part of the identity of Los Cabos.
Golf Is Also Part of the Future of Los Cabos
What interests me most isn’t only what already exists.
It’s what is happening around these communities.
Los Cabos continues to evolve, and golf is increasingly connected with new residential, hospitality and lifestyle developments.
Cabo del Sol is a good example.
The community is combining golf with new hospitality, residences, beach experiences and other amenities.
This is part of a larger evolution in Los Cabos.
The destination is no longer simply about hotels and vacation homes.
It is becoming increasingly about communities designed around lifestyle.
And golf fits naturally into that conversation.
My Perspective as a Real Estate Advisor
As I said at the beginning, I’m not a golfer.
And I’m perfectly comfortable saying that.
But I’ve spent years working in real estate and getting to know the different sides of Los Cabos.
What I have learned is that the best property search usually starts with a much simpler question:
How do you want to live?
If golf is important to you, that immediately changes the conversation.
You may want a private club.
You may want ocean views.
You may want to walk to the clubhouse.
You may want a beach community where golf is simply one of the amenities.
Or you may not care about golf at all but love what a golf community offers.
Those are very different buyers.
And they should not all be shown the same properties.
That’s where I believe having a local advisor makes a difference.
My job isn’t simply to open doors.
It’s to understand what you’re actually looking for and help you understand the differences between communities.
Is a Golf Community Right for You?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
That’s actually one of the reasons I like talking about Los Cabos this way.
There is no single version of luxury here.
For one person, it might be Palmilla.
For another, Querencia.
Someone else might fall in love with Cabo del Sol.
Another person may prefer the Pacific side and the dramatic landscape around Quivira.
And someone else might decide that golf isn’t important at all.
That’s okay.
The goal isn’t to find the most famous community.
The goal is to find the community that makes sense for the way you want to live.
Golf in Los Cabos Is About More Than the Game
I’ve never needed to become a golfer to understand why golf matters here.
I’ve seen what happens when a great golf course is combined with the right architecture, the right location, a strong community and the Baja landscape.
It creates something that is difficult to replicate somewhere else.
And perhaps that’s why golf continues to play such an important role in the evolution of Los Cabos.
Because at the end of the day, people aren’t necessarily coming here just to play golf.
They’re coming here to live differently.
To have more time outside.
To spend more time with family.
To wake up somewhere beautiful.
To enjoy the ocean.
To travel less and live more.
And for some people, golf is simply one of the things that makes that lifestyle complete.
